Bone harvesting is taking the bone from the front of the illum, however this procedure can be extremely painful. Therefore, new techniques have been developed for harvesting graft through smaller incisions to decrease the donor site pain. Harvesting bone from the back of the pelvis can be done through the same small incision.
Dental implants commonly use bone grafting, but also to fuse joints to prevent movement, repair broken bones that have bone loss, and repair broken bones that have not been healed yet.
