What is Foraminectomy?
Foraminectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to attempt and increase the foraminal canal and relieve aggravated nerve roots by eliminating excessive bone, vertebral disc material, and other spinal irregularities that may occur. The abnormal structures that are narrowing the foraminal canal are completely removed to decompress the affected nerves. Any bones, tissues, disc material, or excessive ligament are removed from the area. This procedure is usually combined with a laminectomy (lamina bone is removed), discectomy (vertebral disc is removed), or both of them. A spinal fusion may also be performed if instability of the spine is a pressing symptom.
