Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness, tingling, and other problems in your hand caused by pressure on the median nerve in your wrist. This nerve controls movement and feeling in your thumb and fingers, except for the little finger. It extends from your forearm to your hand through the carpal tunnel in your wrist.
Many things can cause the pressure on the median nerve, causing carpal tunnel syndrome, including:
- The anatomy of your wrist
- Some health problems
- The repetition of strenuous movements (such as working on an assembly line)
To prevent permanent nerve damage, early diagnosis and treatment are key.
What are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome usually develop slowly. Common symptoms include:
- Tingling or numbness in your fingers (except the little finger) or hand
- Trouble holding things, such as a doorknob or a steering wheel of a car
