Sprains

What are Sprains?

A sprain is a stretched or torn ligament. Ligaments are tissues that connect bones at a joint. Falling, twisting, or getting hit can all cause a sprain. You might feel a pop or tear when the injury happens. Many people get strains playing sports, and other activities that include movement. The wrist and ankle are common areas that are sprained.

What are the Symptoms of Sprains?

Common symptoms of Sprains include:

  • Pain in affected area
  • Muscle spasms
  • Swelling
  • Trouble moving the affected joint

What are the Treatments for Sprains

Our orthopedic doctors will use the best treatment to relieve your pain — so you can stop hurting and get back to your normal lifestyle.

Most the treatments for sprained joints include NSAIDS, such as Advil or Tylenol. The best way to remember how to treat a sprain is through the acronym, RICE. R stands for Rest, I stands for Ice (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off), C stands for Compress, and E stands for Elevate.
