What is a Fracture?

A fracture, also referred to as a bone fracture, is a condition where the continuity of the bone is broken. Many bone fractures occur due to high force impact or stress. A fracture may also be the result of conditions which weaken the bones, such as osteoporosis, some cancers, or osteogenesis imperfecta. A fracture caused by a medical condition is known as a pathological fracture

Common symptoms of fractures include:

  • Swelling or bruising over a bone
  • Deformity of an arm or leg
  • Pain in the affected area that worsens when put under pressure or moved
  • Loss of function in affected area
  • In severe cases, bone protruding from the skin
